Ujima Friends Meeting (also known as Ujima Friends Monthly Meeting) is an online Quaker community of faith without borders. It is a worshipping community of people of African descent. Its formation was announced in May of 2021 in this Minute of Declaration and Commitment.
In June of 2023, the Meeting had its first “Family Gathering” in Oakland California. (See more here.)
The meeting was formed by the members who participated in the weekly worship of the Ujima Friends Peace Center and the meeting is now a separate legal entity. (See more about the relationship of Ujima Friends Meeting to Ujima Friends Peace Center and to the Fellowship of Friends of African Descent in the Statement of Clarity and Unity.)
There is a way that this has been centuries in the making. We feel the presence of our ancestors who sat on back benches in Quaker meeting and who lie in unmarked graves in Friends burial grounds, rejoicing with us in this historic moment.
Ujima Friends Meeting is a monthly meeting and is not requesting membership in any existing yearly meeting or organization. We, however, are happy to be in fellowship with any Quaker entity that recognizes and welcomes us as a members of the Religious Society of Friends. In addition, please know that Ujima Friends Peace Center continues to exist as a distinct Quaker service organization.
